Venus Occultation (#26)

Venus Occultation (#26)

Just after 1pm on August 13, 2012 the waning crescent Moon caught up to the planet Venus in the bright afternoon sky. This picture was taken moments before the Moon moved in front of the planet. It was taken with a Canon XSi DSLR shooting through a Borg 101 Astrograph from Sky Trails Observatory in Summerland. The exposure was 1/800 sec. at ISO 200. Thin, high cloud can be seen in the frame. Venus' phase complements the thin crescent of the Moon.
The proximity of the crescent Moon and the planet provided an excellent opportunity to see the crescent and Venus with the naked eye which was an exciting 'extra' experience.
