The comet was at its closest approach to earth and was at an estimated 4th magnitude and the clouds were non-existent. Chris Beckett had reported, on his podcast The Actual Astronomy Podcast, that the comet was naked eye from his location with a similar bortle as mine making me very anxious to see for myself. I saw nothing. Using 10x50 binoculars, I tracked down the location and was pleased to see a comet, and not just a fuzzy ball like all of my previous observations. When I knew where to look, I could just barely make out the comet with averted vision.
