Jan 20, 2019 Eclipse, 2/6

This is my favourite “phase” of a lunar eclipse, where you can see the full range of shading and colour within the earth’s shadow, from the very deep umbra (dark brown, bottom), through orange and gold hues to the outer umbra (nearly neutral grey, with a slight blue or violet tinge). Outside that, the deep penumbra (overexposed at top) is essentially white, even though the illumination comes from a very thin crescent sun. The fact that any coloured light enters the umbra is due to refraction of sunlight through the earth’s atmosphere. From the moon’s perspective, the earth would be a super-thin ring of light, with a spectrum of colours that increasingly favours the red end as the eclipse deepens. How cool would that be to see? Panasonic FZ-300 camera, 1/1.3 sec at f3.5, ISO 100. Cropped and resized from original frame.
