After the crisis brought about by our not being able to have the 24" mirror reground and refigured, it was decided to purchase a 25" Galaxy mirror. Since it did not have a 10" hole in the centre like the 24" there was some debate about retaining the folded Newtonian design. It was decided we should stay on course, partly since some of the main components had already been built, but more importantly because of the advantage of having a convenient viewing height instead of a 12' ladder since the scope was also to be used for public viewing. With the 10" secondary obstruction the scope operates as the equivalent of a 23" instrument.
