The Horsehead Nebula is part of the Orion Complex with active star formation
The deep red color produced by the ionization of Hydrogen gas generated by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis.
Heavy dust concentrations are localized into interstellar clouds resulting in the horsehead configuration blocking star light produced behind it.
